VOLUNTARY GOVERNANCE · TWO POSITIONS

Independent
Non-Executive Directors

Help shape the next chapter of WheelieQueer as we prepare to become a Community Interest Company.

Applications close 14 November 2026

About the Opportunity

WheelieQueer is a Deaf, disabled and LGBTQ+ led organisation providing specialist welfare benefits advice, representation, training and consultancy.

Established in April 2021, we're preparing to become a Community Interest Company (CIC) limited by guarantee in early 2027.

We're looking for two independent Non-Executive Directors to join our founding board alongside our Founder and Chief Executive.

You'll help establish strong governance, provide independent oversight and support WheelieQueer's sustainable development.

We're recruiting for two complementary positions:

01

Finance, Governance & Risk

Providing independent oversight of financial management, organisational governance, risk and accountability.

02

People, Safeguarding & Organisational Development

Supporting good practice in people management, safeguarding, organisational development and accountability.

The Role and Commitment

What You Will Do

  • Help shape WheelieQueer's strategy and long-term sustainability.

  • Provide independent oversight and constructive challenge.

  • Support good governance, accountability and risk management.

  • Review organisational performance and key decisions.

  • Help ensure WheelieQueer remains accountable to the communities it serves.

Time and Arrangements

  • Four board meetings per year, usually online.

  • Approximately one day per quarter, including preparation.

  • Some additional involvement during the 2027 CIC transition.

  • Initial three-year term, renewable.

  • Voluntary and unpaid, with reasonable expenses reimbursed.

  • BSL interpretation and other accessibility arrangements organised and paid for directly wherever possible.

Who We're Looking For

We're seeking two people with complementary professional experience who share WheelieQueer's commitment to Deaf, disabled and LGBTQ+ communities. You don't need previous Non-Executive Director experience, but you should be comfortable providing independent advice, oversight and constructive challenge.

01 — Finance, Governance & Risk

We're particularly interested in experience of:

  • Financial planning, budgeting and financial oversight.

  • Governance, compliance and organisational accountability.

  • Risk management and long-term sustainability.

  • Reviewing financial information and asking constructive questions.

You don't need to be a qualified accountant, but you should have relevant financial or governance experience.

02 — People, Safeguarding & Organisational Development

We're particularly interested in experience of:

  • HR, employment practices or people management.

  • Safeguarding and organisational responsibilities.

  • Supporting staff, contractors and volunteers.

  • Organisational development, leadership and good governance.

Experience may come from employment, community organisations, consultancy or other relevant settings.

What Matters Across Both Roles

We value sound judgement, integrity, collaborative working and the confidence to challenge decisions respectfully. Across the two appointments, we want meaningful understanding of the communities WheelieQueer works alongside.

We particularly welcome interest from Deaf and disabled people, LGBTQ+ people, and people from Black, Asian and other ethnically marginalised communities.

Independence and Eligibility

What independence means to us

Independence is about the ability to exercise your own judgement, provide constructive challenge and act in WheelieQueer's best interests.

You do not need to be a stranger to WheelieQueer or its Founder. Previous professional contact, sector collaboration or personal acquaintance will not automatically exclude you.

We ask applicants to disclose relevant personal, professional or financial relationships so that potential conflicts of interest can be assessed fairly.

Who can apply?

We welcome applications from people who can meet the legal requirements to serve as a UK company director and fulfil the responsibilities of the role.

For these two independent positions, we cannot appoint the Founder's family or household members, current personal assistants, current paid WheelieQueer advisers or contractors, or current WheelieQueer clients.

Other relationships, including friendships and previous collaborations, will be considered individually rather than treated as automatic exclusions.

Accessibility and Support

Accessible Recruitment

We want applicants to be able to demonstrate their experience without unnecessary barriers.

We can provide:

  • Applications in written English or BSL video.

  • BSL interpreters for interviews.

  • Remote interviews and flexible arrangements.

  • Accessible documents and written communication.

  • Interview information in advance where appropriate.

  • Other reasonable adjustments agreed individually.

Support for Directors

Accessibility remains important after appointment, not just during recruitment.

Our arrangements include:

  • Board meetings held remotely by default.

  • BSL interpretation at board meetings.

  • Papers provided in advance.

  • Written minutes and clear communication.

  • Reasonable out-of-pocket expenses reimbursed.

  • Accessibility arrangements organised and paid for directly wherever possible.

How to Apply

Non-Executive Director Position

  1. Your CV or a brief summary of your relevant experience.

  2. A short statement explaining why you're interested in joining WheelieQueer's board.

  3. Which of the two positions you're interested in, and what experience or perspective you would bring.

Applications are welcome in written English or BSL video.
